Sgt. William "Bill" C. Cross, Jr., 98, of Proctor, WV died Tuesday, August 10, 2021, while at Reynolds Memorial Hospital.

Bill was born August 26, 1922 in Reader, WV, son of the late William C. and Hazel (Rogers) Cross.

He was a retired carpenter, a U.S. Eighth Army Air Corp veteran serving during WWII, 4-H involvement for twenty years, loved gardening and his farm and enjoyed when children came to his house with their horses. Bill served as President of the 4-H Leaders Association, President of Carpenters Union which he joined in 1946, member of the American Legion Marne Post #28 and member of the New Martinsville United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Baxter Cross; five sisters, Ruth Snider, Mary Barber, Gertrude Keogh, Virginia Rawe and Mary Catherine Fitzsimmons.

Surviving are four daughters, Linda (Jim) Simms of Mt. Clare, WV, Betty Jean Mayfield of St. Marys, WV, Cheryl (Mike) Acree and Nancy Davis both of Proctor, WV and a very special friend who was like a daughter, Cathie Plyler of Willis, VA; six grandchildren, Jimmy, Marcie, Billie Jo, Tiffany, Matt and Christa and nineteen great grandchildren with the twentieth due in January 2022 and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends received 10 a.m. until time of service at 2 p.m., Saturday, August 14, 2021 at the Jarvis-Williams Funeral Home, 1224 S Bridge St., New Martinsville, with burial to follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
