Robert was a hard-working family man who loved God and his family above all. During the early fifties, Robert worked for GM for many years before returning to his beloved mountain home with his family. He timbered and drove the school bus for Buchanan County and was known as the most honest and humble man. After his family, he most enjoyed working in his vegetable garden, working around his farm, and tending to his cattle.
Born on the family farm on Bearwallow Mountain, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Barry Day; his father, Gilbert Day and mother, Nellie Melissa Steele Day; an infant brother, Billy; brothers, Albert and Fred Day; Sisters, Elsie Harman, Greta Blankenship, Laura underwood, and Lucy Mitchell.
Robert is survived by: His loving wife of 63 years, Joan Hicks Day; he always joked about sending her back to Jolo and then say, "I guess I'll just keep her". Robert's three daughters are Karen Cole and husband, Roger of Bearwallow, Virginia; Renaye Dillon and husband, Larry of New Kent, Virginia; and Cindy Johnson and husband, Glen of Abingdon, Virginia. His grandchildren include Jennifer Cole Looney and husband, Joe; Andrea Cole Smith and husband, Mark; Joshua Robert Lee Cole; one special great granddaughter, Violet Grace Looney; one sister, Joyce Tiller. He is beloved by many nieces and nephews as well many family and friends. His dog, Max, is already missing him.
Robert was a member of The House of Prayer, Jewell Valley, Virginia. He served the Lord and his community faithfully.
Funeral services for Robert Day will be conducted Thursday, August 12, 2021 at 7pm at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, Virginia with the Pastor Bill Hicks and Rev. Tex Sawyers officiating. Burial will be at 10:00 am on Friday, August 13, 2021 at the Gilbert Day Cemetery on Bearwallow near Jewell Ridge, Virginia. Friends and family will serve as pallbearers. Friends are invited to a visitation from 6pm until 9pm on Thursday at the funeral home.
