Following college, he returned to Obion to begin his life of community service and farming career, eventually taking over management of Glover Farming Co. He was active in First Baptist Church of Obion where he served as a deacon, church treasurer and assistant Sunday School teacher as well as member of Beulah Baptist Association Board and Gideons.
Polk dedicated his spare time to various organizations, serving in the following capacities: secretary of E-911 Board and attendee at the annual meeting of Tennessee Emergency Number Association and West Tennessee Local Emergency Planning Committee conferences; board member for American Red Cross, where he participated in disaster work; Executive Committee of the Obion County Democratic Party; graduate of Leadership Obion County and frequently sponsored others to attend; alderman for the Town of Obion; member of the Obion County Chamber of Commerce; founder and board member of Obion County United Way; Tennessee Corn Growers Executive Secretary and State Treasurer and lobbied as Tennessee's delegate on the Corn Growers Services Action Team for the national board; Boy Scout Master; board member of Habitat for Humanity; director for the Commercial Bank of Obion; director for Obion Grain Company; and master of Webkinz. In January 2000, he began serving on the Obion County Commission for District 6, representing Troy and Obion. He held the position for 18 years and was a member of the Budget Committee and Solid Waste Committee. Polk sought out ways to educate himself about county government, attending the University of Tennessee's County Technical Assistance Program which teaches classes for county commissioners and office holders.
Polk was raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason in Western Sun Lodge #88 in Troy, TN, where he served as Worshipful Master in 1966 and was elected to Treasurer thereafter and served faithfully until 2017 when he retired and was elected to Emeritus Status. Polk served The Grand Lodge of Free & Accepted Masons of Tennessee as a member of the Ways and Means Committee and served as the Grand Pursuivant in 2002. His other Masonic memberships and accomplishments include membership in the Union City York Rite Chapter, Council and Commandery where he served as The Illustrious Grand Master of Cryptic Masons Personal Representative from 2004 until 2015. He was a member of the Memphis Scottish Rite Bodies where he had been Honored with the Rank and Decoration of Knight Commander of the Court of Honor. He also had memberships in Tralee Council Knight Masons, West Tennessee York Rite College, The Grand College of Rites, West Tennessee Forest #213 Tall Cedars of Lebanon, AL Chymia Shrine Temple where he was a member of the Past Masters and a Past President of Good Will Shrine Club, Troy Order of the Eastern Star, and he was a Knight Companion of St. Stephen Conclave Red Cross of Constantine.
He loved to travel, visiting most all 50 states as well as numerous countries, whether for mission work, educational enlightenment, or pleasure. Disney World was one of his favorite destinations.
Polk is survived by two of his children, Brooke Glover Emery (Joe) of Dyersburg, and Beaird Glover (Kim Martin) of New Orleans, and three granddaughters: Sarah Elizabeth Emery, Mary Catherine Emery and Rachel Olivia Emery, all of Dyersburg. He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; his son, Joshua Stone Glover, and his brother, Frank Glover.
A celebration of his life will be Saturday at 10 am at the church. Burial at Rosehill Cemetery will follow. In respect for all attending, wearing masks will be requested.
Pallbearers will be Eugene Hudgins, Casey Hood, Brent Fielder, Aaron Boone, Robbin Priest, Mark Watson, Danny Jowers and John Cloar. Honorary pallbearers will be the Senior Men's Sunday School class of First Baptist Church of Obion.
