Ruth Marie Cebuhar passed away on August 3, 2021 at St. John's Garden Court surrounded by her loving family. She was 92 years old. Ruth was born on March 29, 1929 in Evergreen, Colorado, to John Nelson and Gladys (Wigton) Nelson. She was living in Roundup, Montana, when she met the love of her life, George "Zeb" Cebuhar, a coal miner from nearby Klein. Mom loved to tell the story about how she pointed out handsome Zeb to one of her girlfriends and said: "See that guy over there? I'm going to marry him someday." And so she did, on April 29, 1950. They moved to Laurel shortly thereafter when Zeb took a job at Cenex refinery and then got busy raising four children. Mom lived in the same house her and dad built on Washington Avenue until 2016 when she moved to the St. John's campus 2 years after dad's passing in 2014.

Ruth was an accomplished horsewoman in her younger years and competed in barrel racing. A point of pride for mom was having been named Roundup's Rodeo Queen in 1949. Alas, her dream of going on to be crowned "Queen of the West" at the annual Go-Western event in Billings never came to pass. She insists she was a close 2nd though!

Ruth always put the well-being of her family ahead of everything else and was a champion worrier. A trait more than a few of us inherited from her! She was a great cook and family gatherings were always held at her house. A wonderful meal was always preceded by her special shrimp cocktail. Mom loved being around her grandchildren and was always ready and willing to babysit and, in fact, spent many years babysitting grandchildren Jaci, Vince and Maddie - for which Ron and Lynne are forever grateful. We will always treasure the memories we have of our annual Madison River camping trips with mom and dad and of looking out of our tents and campers in the early morning to see mom/grandma cooking breakfast for everyone. The annual Madison vacations and other camping, fishing and hunting adventures our families enjoy to this day are the direct result of the Madison River vacations she and dad took us on when we were growing up.

Ruth was a proud lifetime member of the Democratic party and knew the true meaning of "family values" and "patriotism". Growing up poor during the Depression taught her the core values of hard work and empathy. She gave what she could to those less fortunate than her and didn't judge. She set an example for her children that will be passed on for generations.

It is the opinion of Ruth's family that her claim to fame comes not from having been a Rodeo Queen, but from having been the best mom and grandma anyone could ever hope for. Given the chance, she would have been the best great grandma too (as she was in spirit). When grandchildren stopped by her house to say "goodbye" on their way back to college she always gave them a little spending money for the trip and more often than not, a couple cans of tuna. She made great tuna on toast!

Ruth had a strong bond and loving relationship with her 5 sisters and brother despite the physical distance that separated her from some of them at a young age.

Ruth is survived by her 4 children, 10 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren (with 2 on the way), 2 sisters, 1 brother and numerous nieces and nephews. Children: Bob (Sally) Cebuhar, Ron (Lynne) Cebuhar, Terrie (Craig) Kilber, Sharon (Bob) Stocker. Grandchildren: Tyler (Caryn) Cebuhar, Nathan (Carla Mancini) Cebuhar, Jaci (Scott) Hagfeldt, Vince (Brandi) Cebuhar, Madison (Erin) Cebuhar, Kelsie and Riley Kilber, and Kyle, Katie and Ryan Stocker. Great grandchildren: Bentz Cebuhar, Steele Cebuhar, Renna Cebuhar, Hayden Hagfelt and Cameron Cebuhar. Sisters: Lorraine Cammack and June Passmore. Brother: Edward (Claudia) Pelan.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, George Cebuhar, and sisters Dorothy Wilson, Eva Adolph and Louise LeBlanc.

We will miss you terribly, but the thought of you being in heaven with "papa" makes us smile.

We would like to thank the wonderful caregivers at St. John's Garden Court for their kind and devoted care of mom these past few years. We will be forever grateful for your compassion and dedication.

A graveside memorial service will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens, 1721 Central Avenue, Billings, Montana, on August 11, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. A reception will follow at the American Legion located at 1540 Broadwater Avenue.
