Obituary

Jay Thomas was born on October 17, 1961, to Joseph Thomas and Onieta Thomas in Chicago, Illinois. He transitioned to eternity with his Lord on July 23, 2021, in Dallas, Texas.

Jay graduated from Provine High School in Jackson, Mississippi, in 1979 and later attended Dillard University where he earned a degree in English in 1985. He enjoyed a longtime career at IBM where he worked as a National Duty Manager for 25 years. He later started a career at Stealth where he served six years as an Operations Manager. Jay also received his Six Sigma Orange Belt certification during this tenure.

Jay met the love of his life, Gloria Mitchell, and the two united in holy matrimony on December 17, 1994. The two remained united until his transition.

A servant by nature, Jay was a long-time member of New Mount Zion Baptist Church where he served under the leadership of Dr. R.E. Price, Sr. and later under the leadership of Dr. Tommy L. Brown. Jay served faithfully as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher. He also sang in the Male Chorus.

Among many hobbies, Jay enjoyed reading and inspiring others. Jay served as Falcon's Lair HOA Board President. He also co-founded his own men's fraternity, "The Savages". Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

Affectionately regarded as "Jason", Jay loved people. He never met a stranger and would engage with all who crossed his path. Jay was loving, kind, and caring. His intelligence and jokeful spirit will be fondly remembered and treasured by all who knew and loved him.

He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Joseph and Onieta Thomas; father-in-law, Louis Mitchell, Sr., whom he loved dearly; brother, Joseph Thomas, Jr.; and brother-in-law, Peter Mitchell.
