Col Woods was a Command Pilot with over four thousand flying hours in military aircraft. He was operationally qualified on the F-100, T-33, T-37, 0-1E&G, 0-2A, qualified as an Instructor Pilot in the T-37, T-33, 0-1 and 0-2, and logged over 50 hours as a pilot in UH-1C and D helicopters. Additionally, he had over 460 combat hours as a Forward Air Controller who directed the employment of air power in Southeast Asia. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the fourth highest combat award, the Bronze Star Metal, the Meritorious Service Metal with two oak leaf clusters, the Air Metal with twelve oak leaf clusters, and various other awards and decorations.
Doctor Woods earned a BS, MS, and PhD from Mississippi State University and an MBA from Auburn University. He was a graduate of the USAF Squadron Officers School and the Air Command and Staff College. He was a retired Cattle Farmer and a Certified Mississippi Tree Farmer.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years Ann McRee Woods, daughters Leslie Riggins, Lisa Hester, and Julie Lister. He is also survived by his grandchildren Coty Hester, Lindsey Hester, Lauren Bucciero, and Jenson Lister, his sister Karen Tabb, and 6 great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents Werner Woods and Homa Clyde Woods and his grandchildren Matthew Riggins and Hunter Riggins. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
