Doris Ethel Nelson, 90, of Blackduck, MN died on Monday, August 9, 2021 at Sanford Medical Center in Bemidji, MN.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, August 16, 2021 at Zion Lutheran Church in Blackduck, MN with Rev. Anne Meredith officiating. Visitation will be held from 4-6 PM on Sunday, August 15, 2021 with prayer service at 6:00 at Cease Family Funeral Home in Blackduck, and one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at Lakeview Cemetery in Blackduck, MN.
Doris was born on September 29, 1930 in Niobrara County, Wyoming, the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Black) Beck and at the age of four she moved from Wyoming to the Blackduck area with her family. She attended grades 1-8 at the Woodale Country School in Langor Township and later graduated from Blackduck High School in 1948. She then obtained her practical nurse certification through correspondence from the Chicago School of Nursing and worked at the Bemidji Hospital.
She married Lorenz D. Nelson on July 15, 1949 in Blackduck. They made their home in Cormant Township where they farmed together for over 60 years and raised seven children. She was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church in Blackduck where she taught Sunday and Bible School, sang in the choir and served on several boards. She was also an active 4-H leader from 1960-1973 along with her children. She was a member and past president of the Sunshine Club of Cormant Township. Together, she and Lorenz won many dairy awards over the years.
She enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening as well as canning much of the produce. She was a great baker and a wonderful cook. She enjoyed reading and singing, including singing hymns for funerals. Doris was also active in weekly hymn sings while living at the Good Samaritan Society Senior Living and Care Center. She liked feeding the birds and watching wildlife. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren, family and friends.
Doris is survived by two daughters, Kathy (Jerry) Wenzel of Randall, MN and Elaine Halvarson of Bemidji, MN; five sons, David (Kathy) Nelson of Menahga, MN, Mark (Linda) Nelson of Hines, MN, Dale (Betty) Nelson of Blackduck, MN, Dan (Val) Nelson of Elk River, MN and Paul (Janine) Nelson of Park Rapids, MN; 28 grandchildren; 66 great grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; sister, Connie Pemble of Tenstrike, MN; brother, John (Mary) Beck of Omaha, NE; sister in law, Geri Beck of Encampment, WY; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 62 years, Lorenz Nelson; father, John Beck; mother, Elizabeth Beck-Mostad; stepfather, Edwin Mostad; two great-grandsons, Josiah and Andreas Brunner; a son-in-law, Tim Halvarson; two brothers, Allen Beck and Wayne Beck; two sisters, Frances Johnson and Mary Eldard; and several nephews.
