Army Spc. Henley was assigned to the 603rd Aviation Support Battalion, 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia as a helicopter mechanic. He died at Camp Striker of injuries sustained in a non-combat-related incident – a single gunshot which is under investigation. Melvin graduated in 1999 from Provine High School in Jackson, Mississippi and was among the top 10 students in his class. After graduation, his mom signed his enlistment papers so he could join the Army because he was only 17. He had served one tour of duty in Iraq from November 2003 to November 2004 and was on his second tour. His family says he was under a lot of stress and was not happy about a second tour but they are waiting for the investigation to determine what happened. Melvin was a good man who had always wanted to be a soldier. He wanted to make a difference in other people's lives and loved his family very much. Melvin's tour was scheduled to end in October 2008.
