Canadian Statesman. He served as the 18th Premier of Ontario from March 1, 1971 to February 8, 1985. He became politically active at a young age in local Progressive Conservative politics. In 1951, he graduated from the University of Toronto with a B.A. degree. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in 1959 and later served as minister of both education and university affairs in the provincial government. In 1971, he succeeded John Robarts as premier of Ontario and went on to serve in this office until 1985, when he stepped down. After retiring from office, he continued both on the political scene and the business world until his passing.
