Daughter of William & Hulda (Albers) Menke.
She was the middle of seven children. After graduating from District 35 School, she moved in with her grandparents in Columbus to attend and graduate from Kramer High School. Later she took one year of Business Administration at Luther College in Wahoo, Nebraska.
She spent the next several years on the farm looking after elderly relatives, or, in come cases, children of ailing mothers. When her grandparents needed help, she moved back into town to live and take care of them. After their death, she was approached by Dr. Neumarker to come to work and live at St. Mary's Hospital in Columbus. On March 5, 1940 she began her work at St. Mary's. In 1956 an LPN course was offered at St. Mary's and upon completion she took her State Boards. When the two Columbus hospitals merged (St. Mary's and Behlen Memorial), Ida was given a room at the hospital, now known as Columbus Community Hospital. She circulated from surgery, to central supply and emergency room care. She was on call for the hospital 24 hours a day.
In 1982, she was awarded the Sertoma Service to Mankind Award. She was a member of Shell Creek Baptist Church. She will be remembered as one who had sympathy, care and love for the sick, needy and injured.
