Mrs. Vera May Thornton Johnson, age 83, of Patterson, passed away early Saturday morning (8/7/21) at Baptist Village Retirement Communities in Waycross following an extended illness.

Born April 7, 1938 in Wayne County, she was a daughter of the late Dalton and Alice Jewel Thornton. She grew up in K'ville but lived in Pierce County for most of her life. She had worked at Spatola Shoe Factory for several years but was retired as a seamstress at Julie Hat Company.

She attended Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church and Big Creek Primitive Baptist Church. She was a faithful housewife and had helped keep up the family farm for many years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Earnest Leon Johnson; two sisters, Onie Thornton and Winnie Youmans; and three brothers: Owen Thornton, Quinton Thornton, and Flem Thornton.

Survivors include her son: Teddy Johnson of Patterson; daughter: Kathy Harris (husband Wesley) of Patterson; 2 grandsons: Frank Harris (wife Hayden) of Hampton, Virginia and Dalton Harris (Erika Klotz) of Camden County; a great grandson, Lehm Harris of Hampton, Virginia; 2 sisters, Jannie Johnson of Blackshear and Una Vee Courson of Waycross; a brother, Winton Thornton (wife Wilma) of Blackshear; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

A funeral service will take place on Tuesday (8/10/21) at 11 a.m. at Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the New Home Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Monday evening (8/9/21) from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
