James Henry Brophy was born on October 26, 1933, in Detroit to the late Howard M. and Catharine H. Pixley Brophy and was the youngest of three sons. He was the beloved husband of Margaret for fifty-nine years; loving father of Howard (Dana) Brophy of Bloomfield Hills, Margaret (Daniel) Kowal of Birmingham and Kay (Oliver) Baer of Rockford, Illinois. He is also survived by eight grandchildren: Claire, Lawson and Mallory Brophy; Cate, Kelsey and Dylan Kowal; and Diesel and Ayrshire Baer. He is predeceased by his parents and brothers, Rex and Tom.

Jim attended Lakeshore High School in St. Clair Shores where he played football and spent summers camping with his best friends. Graduating from Denison with a B.A. in Economics, he enjoyed singing in the Glee Club and being a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. Jim served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and loved his country throughout his life. After service, he worked briefly for Fish Engineering in Blanding, Utah. However, his loyalty was to his family in Detroit, and he returned there to join his two older brothers at Brophy Engraving Company. The business grew and has flourished for over 80 years and four generations of Brophys. Jim headed up Sales and enjoyed working his colleagues and friends in the advertising community.
Jim was proud of and loved his children and grandchildren deeply. His favorite tradition was skiing with them in northern Michigan, sharing his joy of skiing with all three generations. He was accomplished in restoring antique cars and antique boats, and had fun touring while making lifelong friendships through these passions. Jim made friends wherever he went, and in retirement he served the community on the City of Bloomfield Hills Planning Commission, receiving a Key to the City in recognition of his contributions.

The family would like to extend our eternal gratitude to all of the nurses and staff at Cedarbrook Bloomfield Hills for their loving care.

Family will receive friends Wednesday, August 11, 2021 from 3-8pm at A.J. Desmond & Sons (Vasu, Rodgers & Connell Chapel), 32515 Woodward Ave. (btwn 13-14Mile), Royal Oak, (248) 549-0500. A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, August 12, 2021, 10am at First Presbyterian Church of Birmingham, 1669 W. Maple Road, Birmingham. Interment will take place at a later date at the Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly, Michigan. The family suggests memorial donations to a charity close to your heart.
