Paul Mauriat was a French orchestra leader, conductor of Le Grand Orchestre de Paul Mauriat, who specialized in the easy listening genre. He is best known in the United States for his million-selling remake of André Popp's "Love is Blue", which was #1 for 5 weeks in 1968. Other recordings for which he is known include "El Bimbo", "Toccata", "Love in Every Room/Même si tu revenais", and "Penelope".Orchestra Leader. Born in Marsellies, France, he conducted his first popular music band during World War II. In 1950 he became the musical director for many great French singers, including Maurice Chevalier. His orchestra made many records and in 1967 they recorded an instrumental version of "Love is Blue", which became a Number One hit. Mauriat led his orchestra on world tours until his retirement in 1998.
