Nancy Mae Long
Devoted mother, hard worker enjoyed travel
Nancy Mae Long, 84, of Shickshinny, also known as "Gram," "Nan" and "Mom Mom" by those closest to her, passed at her home surrounded by her family on Aug. 5, 2021, and joined her eldest daughter, Debra Sorber, in heaven.
Born Oct. 26, 1936, in Hobbie, she was the daughter of the late Palmer Knorr and Margaret Waltman Knorr Peters.
Nancy learned at a very young age what hard work was by growing up on a farm during the Depression. She lived by the motto "If you want something, you've got to work for it. Nothing good comes easy," and instilled that in her children. Nancy was a self-made woman through perseverance and grit, from selling egg salad sandwiches as a young mother on the Marine base where her husband was stationed to selling jewelry from a showcase in her living room to fair stands and eventually to the purchase of the Racusin's building and rentals in Shickshinny.
One of Nancy's greatest missions in life was to keep her children "warm, dry and fed." When her children were young, Nancy played the piano and was a choir director at the United Methodist Church and often for holiday sing-a-longs in the family living room. She was known for her delicious pies, scrumptious cheesecakes and gorgeous African violets. She enjoyed both domestic and overseas travel, road trips, time at the beach, lunch dates with her girlfriends, trips to the casino, playing Words with Friends, finding wonderful recipes on Facebook, and sales at BonTon and Bath and Body! Nancy was a member of the Shickshinny American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, a Red Cross volunteer and was a generous soul, often providing care packages and sending cards to those in need. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the light of her life!
She will be greatly missed by her husband, Peter Long, who was her life partner, staunchest ally, and true love. She is also survived by three daughters: Lynne Wood (Aldo Suracci) of Berwick, Lori Ulichney (Larry Klusmier) and Jill (Gary) Capece of Shickshinny; two sons: Ricky (Michele) Thomas of Millville, and Joseph Long of Dawsonville, Georgia; son-in-law, Richard Sorber, of Shickshinny; and one brother, Frank Knorr, of Danville. She is also survived by three granddaughters: Erica Lenc, Ali Wood and Carlee Capece; five grandsons: Dennis Ulichney, Dustin Ulichney, Cody Wood, Tanner Thomas and Camdon Capece; and three great-grandchildren: Abigail Daub, Addison Kearney and Kason Ulichney.
Along with her parents and daughter, Debra, she was preceded in death by her brothers: Wayne Knorr and Elwood Knorr.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, Aug. 8, 2021, at 2 p.m. at the Mayo Funeral Home Inc., 77 N. Main St., Shickshinny, with Pastor Roger Noss Jr. officiating. Friends and family are invited to call at the funeral home on Sunday afternoon from noon until the time of the service. Interment will be immediately following the service in Sorber Cemetery, Reyburn.
The family asks you consider a contribution to Commonwealth Hospice of Berwick, 1409 N. Market St., Suite 202, Berwick, PA 18603 in Nancy's memory in lieu of flowers.
