Scott James Simmons passed away peacefully on July 31, 2021. Born August 4, 1963 to James and Jane Simmons in St. Mary's, Georgia. He is survived by his wife, Elaine Hallett Simmons, and their two children, Savannah Leigh Simmons and Ashton Kelly Simmons, sisters Stacey Simmons Hiller (Brad) and Beth Simmons Kohlhoff, brother-in-law Bruce Hallett (Caroline), and sister-in-law Mary Hallett Washer (Nathan). He was the uncle to Michael Clare Raciappa (wife Shannon and children Hazel, Wren, and Hawk), Sarah Jo Mathis (daughter Kylie), James Wray Hiller (wife Lakin and daughter Eslie), Fletcher Hallett (Wife Aimee), Abby Hallett, Maryn and Macy Washer.

In his younger days Scott enjoyed an active life; playing football, baseball, and soccer. During high school, he was part of the drum line in the Winter Haven High School band. It is here that he met his future wife, Elaine Hallett. Following high school Scott joined the United States Marine Corp, where he served as part of the Security Forces stationed at the Marine Barracks Naval Weapons Station in Yorktown, Virginia. Following four years in the Marine Corp, Scott and Elaine continued their educations and moved to Charlotte, NC and Missoula, MT before settling in Richmond, VA and starting a family. Scott finished his degree in computer networking and spent the next 20 years working for Strayer University, VCU School of Nursing, Hunton Andrews Kurth Law Firm, and Chick-Fil-A. Scott finished out his military career as a dedicated soldier with the Virginia Air National Guard 192nd Fighter Squadron based out of Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, VA, from which he retired in October 2016. While serving in the security forces with the Air Guard Scott saw numerous deployments, including Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Kyrgyzstan, Andrews Air Force Base, and Fort Eustis Army Base while serving on active duty in support of Operation Noble Eagle in response to the World Trade Center and Pentagon attacks of September 11, 2001. Throughout his military career Scott received the Rifle Expert Badge, Pistol Sharpshooter Badge, Good Conduct Medal for the Marine Corp, Meritorious Unit Commendation for the Marine Corp, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Air Force Expeditionary Service Ribbon, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation, Air Reserve Forces Maritorious Medal, and the Air Force Longevity Service Award.

In January 2020, Scott was diagnosed with Glioblastoma Multiform, an aggressive brain cancer. He fought hard over the next 19 months and during his journey came to faith in the Lord. He believed that in the end, God makes all things new, including him. The Bible tells us that to be apart from the body, is to be in the presence of the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:6-8)

While he will be missed by his family and many friends, we are thankful that he is at peace. Scott was aware of how very blessed he was to be surrounded by such amazing and caring family, friends, and coworkers. His friendships are a testament to his character. His loyalty to family, friends, and country are an example for all of us. We, his family, would like to thank each and every one of you who have walked this journey with us. We want you to know that we could not have done it quite so gracefully without you.

For those of you who knew Scott well, you know he had no use for flowers. We are respectfully asking that in leiu of flowers you consider sending a donation to one of the following two charities who's missions align strongly with his life and his passion.
