Death Of Another Old Settler
Another old and respected Masterton settler - the third within the past few days to pass away - died at an early hour this morning at her residence, Kuripuni, in the person of Mrs Agnes Thompson, relict of the late Mr J. E. Thompson.
Deceased, who was 68 years of age, left Scotland for Melbourne in her fifteenth year and saw a good deal of pioneer life in the early days of Australia. In the year 1965 Mrs Thompson came to Wellington with her husband, who took the Freemason's Hotel (afterwards the National) and subsequently the Prince of Wales Hotel in Grey-street. About twenty years ago Mr and Mrs Thompson sold out and came to Masterton and for many years carried on the Prince of Wales Hotel in Queen Street, afterwards taking the Empire Hotel, which Mrs Thompson and Mr T. D. Thompson carried on after the death of Mr J. E. Thompson. About two years ago deceased, whose health began to fail, retired from active business life, living quietly at her son's farm, until about nine weeks ago when she was stricken with paralysis. The unremitting care and attention of Mrs T. D. Thompson, who nursed her most devotedly, prolonged life almost beyond expectation, but medical skill and careful nursing could do no more and at twenty minutes to one o'clock this morning, the sufferer passed away in the presence of her intermediate relations.
Deceased who was held in great esteem and respect for her straightforward, plain-dealing, yet withal kindly ways, is survived by one son, Mr T. D. Thompson and one daughter and also several grandchildren.
