Maria "Guiya" Moore, 84, of Orlando died peacefully in her sleep on December 24, 2017, 57 years to the day that she met her husband Frank.
She was born in Utuado, Puerto Rico on July 16, 1933 to her parents Francisco Valentin Miraval and Josefa Serrano Rivera and lived on a coffee farm in the hills of Utuado. Through extraordinary determination, she made her way alone to San Juan to attend high school and graduated from El Caribe High School in 1955. Her yearbook is testament to her sincerity and goodness that earned the love of her class mates.
In 1960, she met her future husband at a Christmas Eve party. He was there with another date, as was she. They soon married and moved to Frank's new post in Maryland. There, she worked at the NSA, translating secret documents during the Cuban Missile Crisis. In Maryland, she opened her Silver Springs home to several friends who remain as close extended family.
She helped raise Frank's children Patrick, Frankie, Carol, and Sophie in Maryland and had two children of her own- Myra in 1967 and Albert in 1971. After Frank retired from the Army, they moved to Orlando in 1974 where he became a realtor. Many long and lasting friendships resulted from Mary's generosity and helpfulness as she assisted families new to the area settle in, even opening her home to many of them. Mary's house was always a hotbed of activity. Many nieces and nephews spent summers in her Orlando home and toured the area in her racy Mercury Cougar and Dodge Dart. She was a teacher, counselor, and second mother to many.
Mary loved playing her dominos, seldom losing. She was a source of frustration to many at the Club Borinqueno and at the South Econ Recreation Center. She watched most Orlando Magic games, often decrying the play of Nick Vucevik.
In August, this year, she proudly sponsored and attended a Valentin Family Reunion in Hallandale, Florida. Family from all over the US gathered and bonded. Family was important to Mary, and the reunion was a highlight of her recent years.
Sharp-witted, demanding, kind, and a giver, Mary had a heart of gold. She will be remembered and missed by her children Myra, Albert, Patrick, Carol, and Sophie; grandchildren Nikole, Ashley, Jessica, Kalen, Elijah, Anya, Nicholas, Lauren and Katie; sisters Irma Abreu, Benita Cordero, and brother Hector Valentin; as well as a large and extended family and many friends.
