John was born on the family farm in Evendale. After grade school he passed a test to potentially become a teacher, his father's ill health required him to tend the farm. He was open to new farming machinery and techniques. He was one of the first in the valley to use a tractor and cease using horses. He led a John Deere dealership until 1941. He sold many of the first tractors sold in the area. He had a general farm, specializing in beef, hogs and chickens. He was active in the Lauvers Mennonite Church, joining at a young age. John served many years as the church trustee. At various times he was the Sunday School Superintendent and teacher. Was a generous giver, helping neighbors and the fellowship. John was well respected, hard working and a steady community member. In his later years he made a conference trip to Oregon. Occasionally he visited his daughter in Franconia, then later DuBois. He was uninvolved in politics. He lived in his latter years with his son Lloyd and family, whom he was in business with.
