George Nicholas Hobbs passed away July 31, 2021, in Nampa, Idaho, after ending his life-long battle with many medical ailments from needing a heart transplant to resulting kidney failure. Nicholas was born to Douglas Parkinson Hobbs and Valeta Nelda Hodges on March 9, 1949, in Paul, Idaho. He was the youngest of his five siblings.
Nicholas spent most of his childhood growing up between Idaho and Utah. As a youth, he learned the importance of hard work by carrying out his responsibilities on his family farm. He also enjoyed teasing his older sisters, and even threw an egg or two at them.
Nicholas married Janet Patricia Mast October 8, 1983, in Stanley, Idaho and was later sealed in the Boise Idaho Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Together they had two children.
Nicholas had many careers during his lifetime. He was a financial advisor, semi-conductor operator, and later in a life, a medical assistant in a cardiology department. At 17 years old, he volunteered to serve his country and joined the Marines. Though his service was difficult, he was always proud of his service and often reminded us, "Once a Marine, always a Marine".
Nicholas loved the gospel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He held fast to his faith and continued to study and grow throughout his life. Learning was important to Nicholas. He was often found to be reading several intellectual books at once. Even in his last days, he was reading a new book about geology. Another passion he had was puzzles. They were everywhere and gave him hours of pleasure. The harder, the better! Nicholas also enjoyed fireworks during the Fourth of July and often put on an exciting and sometimes dangerous display.
Nicholas found great enjoyment and peace in Japan and McCall, Idaho. While living in Japan for a year, he loved meeting new people and being immersed in the history there. Finally, in his later years, he was able to achieve his dream of having a cabin in McCall. This is where he felt the most peace and loved watching the deer come into the yard.
As many know, Nicholas could be stubborn and strong headed, but these characteristics helped him to push through all the trials that he faced throughout his life. He endured more than most could even fathom but continued to push on with faith through it all. Nicholas fiercely loved his family. He always wanted what was best for them and did what he could to help them. He loved being a grandfather and being with his grandchildren brought him the most joy in life. Nicholas also claimed he had a more sophisticated British humor. In other words, he often liked to tease and be sarcastic, which he found to be quite enjoyable.
Nicholas is survived by his wife Janet; his five children and their spouses: Chris Hobbs, Nathan (Misty) Hobbs, Jeni Lynn Hobbs, Allie (Justin) Allen, and Braden (Jen) Hobbs, as well as his five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as two of his sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 6:30 PM, Saturday, August 7, 2021, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 1500 Smith Ave in Nampa, Idaho. He will later be buried at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery in Boise, Idaho.
