BARNES
- On March 14th, 1906, Joseph Barnes, in his 76th year. Private interment. no flowers.

Wairarapa Age, 15 March 1906
Mr JOSEPH BARNES
The death occurred yesterday at his residence, Victoria Street, Masterton, of Mr Joseph Barnes, from heart failure. He was a native of Staffordshire and for the past twenty three years a respected resident of this town. Deceased had been ailing for some time and his death was not unexpected. Mr Barnes, who was 75 years of age, came to the colony in October 1883 in the ship 'Oxford' landing at Wellington. The 'Oxford' left England in January, but went ashore and the passengers, including Mr Barnes returned to England. Some months after, the 'Oxford' was refloated and decease came on to New Zealand with her. Almost directly after arriving in Wellington, deceased came to Masterton, where he resided ever since. Three daughters; Mesdames E. Welch (Mary Ann 'Pollie'), F. Fellingham (Elizabeth Catherine) and Miss Alice D. Barnes (Alice Dawne) and two sons, Messrs Thomas (Thomas William) and John (John Joseph) Barnes, are left to mourn their loss. The funeral, which will take place to-day, will be a private one.

* Owing to the death of Mr J. Barnes, father-in-law of Mr E. Welch, captain of the Carlton A team, the march against Carterton has been postponed. Carlton B will commence their match against Carterton instead.

NOTE The passenger list of the Oxford records Joseph & Mary arriving with their children John, Thomas, Elizabeth, Susannah, Alice & Mary .. https://www.angelfire.com/az/nzgenweb/oxford.html
