Michael John Tillman
November 15, 1972 - December 19, 2020

Michael John Tillman, age 48, of Nevada, Iowa, passed away at 07:23 AM, December 19, 2020 at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, Iowa City, Iowa of liver and kidney failure. He was transported to Iowa City as a last resort, December 16, but his condition was so precarious that nothing could be done. Fr. Gregory Steckel, UIHC Chaplain, administered last rites. His parents told him that they very dearly loved him. That was all.
Two minutes later; Nurse Kelli's voice, soft, "I think his heart just stopped."

Michael was born November 15, 1972 in Davenport, Iowa, the son of Jerry and Judith Ann Tillman, née Thoene. His first four years were spent near "Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church" in Davenport, where he was baptised by Fr. Kenneth Martin. The first school he attended was North of Austin, Texas. Later he attended Durant Elementary School in Durant, IA. and Northwood Elementary School in Ames, IA. He graduated Nevada High School in 1991 and the following Fall enrolled at "Iowa State University" in Ames, Iowa. He received seven Bachelor of Science Degrees, all Majors, in Physics, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Botany, Genetics, Psychology and Zoology. When his parent's health began to decline, Michael assumed the roles of caretaker, caregiver, advisor and dear friend. He continued in those roles until the ambulance took him from his home on December 16, 2020.

He was a familiar figure on the campus of Iowa State University and the sidewalks of campus town. He often wore a long black leather trenchcoat. He was a large man and had a kind of rolling walk. Michael might seem a bit imposing, even intimidating, until you got to know him. He was a warm, kind-hearted and compassionate person who tried to help out whenever he could. Among his papers, I found thank you notes from other students for helping them with their studies.

He was protective too. Sometimes when I went for a walk, after a block or so I would turn to see Michael in the street watching out for me. And as I completed my 10 block or so walk, I might look ahead and there was Michael in the street again. A couple times I was gone too long. I had stopped to chat or pet a dog or something. Michael and Judy got worried, hopped in the car and came looking for me. It was so heart warming that they cared so much.

Michael is survived and lovingly remembered by his parents; Aunts, Cathy "Mary" Fosdyck of Blue Grass, IA, Kaye Ann Lebeau of Davenport, IA, Annetta Tillman of Emden, IL; Uncles, Craig (Lisa) Tillman of Colona, IL, Robert (Bev) Thoene of Geneseo, IL, Dennis (Deb) Thoene of Buffalo, IA, Bruce (Kathy) Thoene of Long Grove, IA, Lyle Thoene of Iola, KS and Darrell Thoene of Durant, IA and many many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents and two uncles: Charles Joseph Tillman and Thomas James Tillman.

In lieu of flowers, Please kiss your loved ones and hold them dear. Tell them you love them and how proud you are of them. All acts of kindness are appreciated.
