William Leroy McGinnis

Edgewater - William Leroy (Bill) McGinnis, a lifelong resident of Edgewater, passed away on November 20th 2020 aged 60. He was deeply committed both to his family and to the local community. Bill was born in New Smyrna Beach on July 19, 1960, the elder child and only son of the late William Thomas and Laverna van de Sande McGinnis. He grew up in a loving household with his parents and sister Rebecca (Becky). Among many pursuits, he enjoyed camping with the Boy Scouts, and became an Eagle Scout. From a musical family, he played the clarinet in the school band. As a teenager he worked at Tropical Blossom Honey Company owned by his uncle, David McGinnis. Vacations took him to stay with his uncle and aunt, John L. and Dot Bell, in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina. As a young man he volunteered as an emergency medical technician for Edgewater Fire Rescue, one of many ways in which he expressed his deep sense of the community. He continued to develop his interests in health and medicine, studying Speech and Hearing Pathology at the University of Central Florida. After graduation, he worked as a speech therapist at Edgewater Public School. There he met Lynne Hosey, a music teacher at the school. They married in 1987. Their children Jennifer, Michael, and Heather, also live in the area. Jennifer is married to Myles Lawler, and they have two children, Emma and Reed; Michael and Paige married in December 2019. Bill and Lynne's marriage ended in divorce. Bill worked at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University for several years. He subsequently worked as a counselor at Daytona Methadone Treatment Center and then at the Salvation Army, positions that reflected his patience, kindness, and ability to connect with people in need. From 2007 to 2019 he worked at Home Depot in New Smyrna where he enjoyed working closely with many loyal local customers, some of whom he had known all his life. In 1999 Bill married for a second time, to Danielle Roberts and was a loving father to their children William, Joshua, and Marissa. Bill's sister Rebecca is married to Tim Barringer and lives in New York City, where she works at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Bill is survived, and deeply missed, by his widow, six children, two grandchildren, his sister and brother-in-law. A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, July 6 at 11:00 am at Edgewater Alliance Church. Arrangements are entrusted to Settle-Wilder Funeral Home.
