On February 17, 1926, in Warwick, RI, Lawrence was born the son to the late Charles and the Anna (Martin) Nelson.
Larry proudly served in the Navy during World War II joining on November 16, 1943 at the age of 17. He was assigned to the tanker ship USS Chiwawa carrying fuel to the destroyers. The Navy sent him traveling overseas to places he would have never imagined such as Casablanca, Morocco and Oran, Algeria where he did ship repairs on landing craft and tankers to be used in the southern France invasion. He then traveled to Palermo, Sicily. After returning home on leave he received his next assignment on the destroyer, USS William Rush, working in the engine room. They were sent to Guantanamo Bay Cuba and was soon after honorably discharged on May 16, 1946 with a letter of gratitude from the Secretary of the Navy.
He then met the love of his life, Barbara and knew instantly that she was the one and started a family together.
He began his career in carpentry building houses, mostly on his own. His skills grew and worked as a cabinet maker where he worked in high end commercial projects in the Boston area. His faith and family gave him all the provisions he needed in life. He was a parishioner at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Warwick, RI for several years.
In his 95 years, Larry grew to be a wonderful man, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother. His love will live on in his three children: Joan Bowen (Robert) of Warwick, RI, Linda Tanner (Rick) of East Greenwich, RI, and Eric Nelson (Karen) of West Warwick, RI; two grandchildren: Jennifer Macari (Wayne) and Eric Nelson II (Letizia); great-grandchild Brextyn Nelson and a sister, Mildred Brackenbury. He is predeceased by his brothers, Harold, Richard and Warren Nelson.
