Mary Ann Streeter Pittman was born 1838 in Edgecombe County, the eldest of 3 known children (2 boys/ 1 girl) born to wealthy planter, Reddin/Redding Pittman and his wife, Martha Bryan/Bryant.

She was the paternal grandchild of Grisham Coffield Pittman & Mary Lynch; and a direct descendant of of this family's patriarch, Thomas Pittman Sr. of Monmuthshire, England who arrived in the Virginia Colonies around 1630. Her maternal grandfather was Dempsy Bryant/Bryan of Edgecombe County, NC.

Mary Ann was 20 years old when she married 40-year old, Dr. Newsome Jones Pittman (her first cousin, twice removed).

They would become parents of two known daughters, Kate (1859-73) and Minerva (1860-1940).

The marriage was brief, as Mary died in 1861, at age 22, soon after the birth of her 2nd daughter.

Six years later, in 1867, Dr. Pittman married Mrs. Mary Eliza Battle Dancy, the widow of William Frances Dancy. She is buried next to her husband and his second wife and her children.
