James Herman Matthews, 66, of Dawson, quietly passed away at his home after a short but hard fought battle with pancreatic cancer Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2007. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 23, at the funeral home. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 24, at Wade Funeral Chapel in Hubbard with the Rev. Ron Sanders officiating. Interment will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery.

James was born in Dawson, Texas, to the late Ottma S. and Flora Bankston Matthews. He attended Dawson schools and graduated in May of 1959. Shortly after, in October 1959, he joined the U.S. Air Force where he served until May 1969. James then worked for the Chattanooga Glass Plant in Corsicana from 1969 to 1985 and in 1986, he went to work for Ennis Extruded Products where he worked until retiring on April 10, 2007. James was a very loving, kind man and leaves behind numerous friends.

James leaves behind his wife of 36 years, Linda Gale (French) Matthews, of Dawson; daughters, Cheryl Dibbles and her husband, Jason, of Teague, and Jennifer Spain, of Dawson; brothers, Bobby Matthews and his wife, Edna, of Dawson, and Newt Matthews and his wife, Lynn, of Dawson; sister, Billie Sue Sanders and her husband, Cecil, of Dawson; granddaughters, Chelsea and Ashley Dibbles, of Teague, and Jalyn and Jade Spain, of Dawson; son-in-law, Doug Spain; step-grandsons, Justin and Jerred Spain, all of Dawson; and several nieces, nephews and other family members.
