Georgetown:

Alicia Anne Sports Jernigan, wife of the late Jackie E. Jernigan, died peacefully at her home August 3, 2021.

Alicia was born in Georgetown on October 15, 1946. She was the daughter of the Late Levi Dudley Sports, Jr. and the late Geraldine McKenzie Sports.

A modern-day Scarlett O'Hara if ever there was, Alicia was born of grit, tenacity, and a quiet fighting spirit. She was a survivor. Alicia first showed that fighting and survival spirit when playing "Cowboys and Indians" with her favorite Uncle Mike at a young age. Uncle Mike declared he was the Indian and proceeded to tie her to the large Oak tree and lit a fire around her. She never stopped fighting for her life from that time on.

Alicia was a graduate of Winyah High School where she lettered in basketball and may have been the only student to cry like a baby at her graduation. She loved those years dearly and wanted to hang on to every minute.

She attended Winthrop College and returned to Georgetown where she met her husband of 53 years, Jackie Jernigan.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Georgetown, sang in the choir and played the piano for the children's choirs. After a 35-year career as a computer programmer with Georgetown Steel she retired. During her time at Georgetown Steel, she began her most determined fight after being diagnosed with breast cancer. After retirement Alicia found her true passion.

Always a student of history, she began putting the pieces of the McKenzie/Sports history together. In the book she complied for her family she wrote: "My research of our branch of the McKenzie Line led me to libraries, court houses, archives, probate records and cemeteries. With my husband, I have been all over Clarendon, Sumter, Williamsburg, Marion and Georgetown Counties, finding cousins, discovering graves, holding in my hands 18th century wills, literally touching our past. I hope you will treasure our family history as I do and get to know your ancestors." This work led to membership submission and acceptance into The Arthur Manigault 63 Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) and the Winyah Chapter of The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) where she became an active member.

Suddenly after 22 cancer-free years her cancer returned. Then for 7 more determined years she fought the disease until she could no longer fight the good fight.

She was an inspiration to the family she leaves behind. Her son: Justin Sports Jernigan (Elisha) – Charlotte, NC; Grandchildren: Jackson Stuart Jernigan – Berea, Kentucky; Ashton McKenzie Jernigan – Berea, Kentucky; Harrison Sports Jernigan – Charlotte, NC and Pierce Kilby Jernigan – Charlotte, NC. Sisters: Pamela Sports Nelson (John) – McConnells, SC; Angela Sports Paul (Glenn) – Georgetown, SC and Nicki Sports Davis (Richard) – Lexington, SC. Additionally, there are many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.

Visitation will be Friday, August 6 at 10 to 11:00 am in the First Baptist Church Parlor, 219 Cleland Street. A Memorial Service will follow at 11:00 am in the sanctuary of the First Baptist Church. I

n lieu of flowers, memorials made be made to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, SC Affiliate, 1064 Gardner Road, Suite 303, Charleston, SC 29407.
