AMARAL, Claire
Cynthia Claire McDowell Amaral, 99 years old, was born on February 16, 1907, in Rocklin, Calif. She passed away on November 19, 2006.

Claire attended elementary school in College City, Calif., and Pearce High School in Arbuckle, Calif. Claire attended Healds Business College in Sacramento and upon graduation went to work in the business office at Hales Department Store, where she worked until her retirement.

Claire married Thomas Amaral in 1932. They were married 63 years, and they enjoyed traveling and going to their place in Ft. Bragg, Calif. They loved their home in Sacramento, in which they lived most of their married life, and Claire lived there until she was 96. Claire's mother's mother and father met and married at Bidwell Bar in Butte County in 1852. Her great-grandmother Nancy Elliot's family arrived there in a covered wagon and her great-grandfather Ivory Nason, travelled to California on a sailing ship to San Francisco, and then to Bidwell Bar to mine gold. After they were married, they settled on and farmed in the west side of the valley around Dunnigan, where Claire's mother was raised. Claire and Tommy never had children, but they were very close to their extended families.

"Aunt Claire" was loved by everyone. She had a giving spirit, keen sense of humor, was very loyal, and enjoyed family gatherings. She loved corresponding with friends and family and always sent greeting cards. Claire loved the Music Circus and she and a niece had season tickets. She also enjoyed Chinese food and she looked forward to New Year's, when she went out to dinner with the Foster/Nason family for Chinese dinner. Claire volunteered for years with the Lung Association, helping to mail out the Easter Seals. She was adamant about supporting Sacramento charities.

Claire was preceded in death by her husband Tommy. She leaves her sister-in-law Eleanor Neufeld, brother-in-law Clarence Kemper, cousin Mildred Swinnington, nieces Cynthia Whistler, Susan Myers, Penny Urbatsch, and nephews Edwin McDowell, Jerry Neufeld, and Jim Neufeld. She also leaves many of Tommy's nieces and nephews and numerous cousins.

Claire requested there be no services, and she will be interred in Mary's Cemetery in Yolo County. Bequests can be made to Mary's Cemetery, 38870 County Road 13, Woodland, CA 95695, to the Sacramento Food Bank, or to the charity of your choice. Arranged by GEORGE L. KLUMPP CHAPEL OF FLOWERS.
