Joan passed away Monday, August 2, 2021 at her home in Claremont at the age of 77.

Joan Mavis Schock was born July 22, 1944 in Fargo, ND to Richard and Elnor (Loebrick) Schock. As a youngster, she grew up in the Buffalo/Wheatland, ND area and attended school in Buffalo, graduating from Buffalo High School.

In November of 1961, Joanie was united in marriage with her high school classmate, Robert F. Thompson. They spent a short time living on the Schock farm before moving to Carrington, ND. There Joan worked for the local Super Valu.

In 1969, they moved to Claremont, SD and have made it their home since that time. In Claremont, Joan raised their girls and worked part-time keeping books for the elevator, and later at cleaning homes.

Joan loved all sporting events, especially basketball and baseball. Her favorite team was whoever was playing at the moment! She enjoyed bowling, and was an excellent cook. Joan had a keen awareness of what older folks needed, and it endeared her to a number of elderly people.

Joan was an active and devoted member of the Claremont United Methodist Church. She served as church organist for 35 years – from 1973 to 2008. She, along with good friend and pianist, Yvonne Gibbs, were well known for playing beautiful piano/organ duets. Together, they operated as a single artist, each just seeming to know what the other was going to do. Over the years they played for countless Sunday services, weddings and funerals.

In addition to her selfless music service to her church, Joanie was also a member and past president of their UMW, had been a Sunday School and VBS teacher for a number of years, and was one of the main promoters of their annual Christmas Tree Lane which the church sponsored for many years.

In the late 90's, Joanie's health began to decline. She was lovingly cared for these past years by her husband, Bob and their daughters. The family is extremely grateful to Dr. Wachs for his compassionate care, the hospice group who has been with them these final days, and to Julie, a very special home health caregiver.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband of 60 years, Bob Thompson of Claremont; her two daughters: Deb Thompson of Claremont; Stephanie (Roger) Olson of Aurora, CO; three grandsons: Reid, Joshua and Luke Olson of Aurora, CO; two sisters: LaJune (Dennis) Unruh of Fargo, ND; Vicki (Tim) Olson of Fargo, ND; and two brothers-in-law: David (Marlys) Thompson of Ellendale, ND and Tom Thompson of Williams, AZ.

Preceding her in death were her parents: her father in 1997, and her mother in 2014.
