Fired Police Lieutenant Dies Beneath Truck
J. E. Slaughter Logging Victim
John E. Slaughter, 46, of 925 W. Roma, fired in August as a Phoenix police lieutenant, was killed Wednesday when he was pinned under an overturned lumber truck in Gila County.
The accident occurred 10 miles north of Young on the road to a sawmill at Overgaard in the Mogollon Rim country.
Gila Deputy Sheriff Den Marley said Slaughter, who was driving, apparently lost control of the heavily laden truck and trailer when the trailer's rear wheels went off the road. The truck overturned.
The deputy said Slaughter apparently died almost immediately of multiple injuries. Coroner Bill Turner of Young termed the accident unavoidable. Phoenix policemen who knew Slaughter said he owned some lumber trucks operating in that area.
Slaughter, who had served 19 years with the police department, was discharged for misconduct while on duty. He denied the charges and an appeal to the municipal civil service board is pending.
