Born on 28 March 1937 in Dublin, Ireland to John and Elizabeth Coyne (née Shortall), James lived a large part of his life in Ireland before emigrating to the United Kingdom. He married Teresa Mary Somers on 27 December 1965 in the Church of Mourne Road, Drimnagh, Dublin. His wife Marie, as she was known, gave birth to a stillborn male child on 14 August 1968 in Coombe Hospital and his wife passed two days later on 16 August 1968 due to heart and lung illnesses. Both his wife and child are buried in his mother and father's grave in Mount Jerome Cemetery. James married Glennis Roberts (née Jones; 1939-2006) in 1982 and passed in Great Yarmouth on 4 Feb 2015.
