US Congressman. He graduated from Austin's St. Edwards University in 1937, received his law degree from the University of Texas in 1940, and became an attorney in Corpus Christi. He served in the Navy from 1941 to 1945. In 1946 he was Assistant County Attorney of Nueces County, and he was Assistant District Attorney from 1947 to 1950. He was County Attorney from 1951 to 1952, and County Judge from 1953 to 1956. In 1956 Young was elected to the US House of Representatives as a Democrat. He was reelected 10 times, serving from 1957 to 1979. In 1963 Young was part of the Dallas motorcade President Kennedy was riding in when he was assassinated. In 1977 Young was accused of misconduct by a former member of his staff, who said she and several colleagues had received pay raises after giving in to Young's sexual advances. The ensuing scandal led to the suicide of his wife and his defeat in the 1978 Democratic primary election. After leaving Congress, Young resided in Alexandria, Virginia and worked as a lobbyist and consultant.
