Robert Gentry Byrd, Sr.
September30, 1939--July 31, 2021

Robert was preceded in death by his mother, Hattie Dees Byrd, his father, Paul C. Byrd, many uncles and aunts and cousins, and his infant grandson, Joshua Gentry Borton.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Carol West Byrd; daughter, Jennifer B. Bigger and husband, John of Fayetteville; a son, Robert G. Byrd II and wife, Tonia of Fayetteville; two granddaughters, Meredith and Caroline Borton; a grandson, Benjamin Gentry Byrd; and a sister, Juanita Dove and husband, Melvin of Hope Mills. Robert is also survived by many well-loved nieces and nephews and cousins beyond number.

Robert was born on September 30, 1939, in Hope Mills NC, growing up on the mill pond surrounded by deep family ties. Robert's mother and father, along with many other family members, worked in Mill Number Four in Hope Mills. Robert grew up going to Hope Mills School and excelled as a football player for the Millers. Robert left Cumberland County for only a short while, studying at Campbell College, then earning a degree in education at East Carolina University. Robert quickly returned home, as something much stronger was drawing him back to Hope Mills. A pretty and vivacious cheerleader by the name of Linda Carol West was waiting for him. Robert married Linda in 1963, and they would spend the next 58 years together as husband and wife and best friends.

Robert and Linda made a home in Fayetteville, giving birth and raising two children, Jennifer and Robert II (Robbie). Robert began work at the Public Welfare Department of Cumberland County. He then became a juvenile court counselor in Cumberland and Hoke Counties. It was through this service to his community that Robert met many lifelong friends. Robert left county government to pursue a career in business when he went to work for the Wilsons' of Highland Lumber Company in 1969. He began work as Credit Manager with the family-owned business and then made his way to Vice President before he had to medically retire in 2004.

Robert was always a community servant, whether through his work with county government, Highland Lumber, as a member of the Hope Mills Lions Club, or serving on the local Board of Education. Robert, however, found his greatest role of servant lived out in God's church, as he was always present in the Lord's house working as a lay person until his health would not allow it. Robert grew up as a member and then served as a lay leader at Highland Baptist Church in Hope Mills, then served his later years as a deacon and officer at Lafayette Baptist Church in Fayetteville.

Robert's greatest love, only second to his God, was his family. Robert and Linda grew inseparable over the years, raising their two children and four grandchildren. Robert and Linda were always family focused, ever-present in their children and grandchildren's lives, whether it be through educational endeavors, sports events, band camps, or simply having a cookout at their house at Cypress Lakes.

Robert in many of his last years was ill with several health concerns, but you would never know it by his kind and loving demeanor and his lack of complaint. His willingness to continue to serve the Lord, no matter how he might feel on any given day, was a testament to his Savior and Lord, Jesus, who gave him strength.

Due to rising Covid concerns, a Memorial service will be held at the graveside, Wednesday, August 4, at 11am, at Lafayette Memorial Park with Rev. Dr. Kevin Moore and Rev. Steve Branch presiding. The family will be available to say a word to family and friends after the service at the graveside.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorial gifts to Lafayette Baptist Church, 501 Hope Mills Road, Fayetteville, NC 28304, or the Fayetteville Family Life Center, 114 Highland Avenue, Fayetteville, NC 28305.
