George was the son of Humphrey Cunningham and Rhoda Simril. He was a Revolutionary War Soldier and was at the battles of Hanging Rock, Fishing Creek and William's Plantation. At Kings Mountain he served with his brother Capt. John Cunningham and fought in the right wing under Col. James Williams.
Mary McCarter was his 2nd wife and the mother of six children, although Abner Cunningham has not been proven.
