Russell Thompson was born between 1775-1785 in Vermont to unknown parents. All census records of his children give Vermont as their father's birth state.

He married 21 September 1808 in Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts to Elizabeth "Eliza" Louisa Russell, daughter of Abner Russell and Mary Wardwell. He was living in Sangerfield, New York at the time (3 hours away by travel today).

They continued to move west after being married: Pennsylvania, then Tioga County, New York, Allegany County, New York, and on to Beaver Dam, Wis.

They must have moved between 1808 and 1812 when the first known child, Franklin (1812-1896), was born in Pennsylvania. Their second child Sabin (1815-1898) was born in Tioga County, New York (recorded on his gravestone). From then all the children were born in New York: Russell, Jr. (1817-1897), Abner (1819-198), Elizabeth, Jr. (1829 - ) and possibly another sister (Russell Jr.'s letters to his children indicated "sisters" not just one).

We believe he came to Wisconsin sometime about 1842-1844 with his family. His children Sabin, Franklin, and Russell all were in Wisconsin early before Wis. became a state in 1848.

He died before the 1850 census as Elizabeth was a widow and when she died in 1854 they bought her plot the day after her death so one would assume he wasn't buried in Beaver Dam, Dodge County, Wis. with her-at least not in that cemetery (which was started in 1842).

The Dodge County court house records were lost in a fire so there is no way to check for information on vital records.

The known children: Franklin, Sabin, Russell R. Jr., Abner, and Elizabeth and possibly more daughters as his son Russell, Jr. mentions sisters when writing to his children.
