JOSEPH ELKINS, born Murphy, NC October, 1921. Attended University of North Carolina. Entered service November 1942, took artillery basic at Ft. Bragg. Assigned as driving instructor, Ft. Bragg Hq.; transferred to 69th Div. Inf. at Camp Shelby, then to 724th FABN as training cadre until division em barked for England Dec. 1, 1944.
First combat near Malmedy early 1945. Served as member three man Forward Observer Team, relaying fire commands to 155mm Howitzers in rear. After Rhine crossing, assigned as radio operator to Major Serville, until Russian linkup and withdrawal to Bad Durenburg. Transferred to Bremen Enclave (29th Div.) and Berlin (78th Div.), before rotating to U.S.. Discharged February 1945 at Ft. Dix.
Studied photography in Dallas and New York City in 1945-45. Traveled to four continents as photographer, cinematographer, A-V Manager, Dir. of MultiMedia Production. Retired October 1986 to Durham/Chapel Hill, NC area.
Married LaVerne Kingrea in 1950; one daughter, Karen; one son, David (deceased).
