Charles Wayne Nichols Sr.

Grand Prairie - Charles Wayne Nichols, 83, formerly of Odessa, slipped peacefully from this world into the presence of his Savior on Wednesday, July 28, 2021.

Wayne was born January 16, 1938, in Roscoe, TX to M.J. and Donna (Geron) Nichols and spent most of his early life in Sweetwater, TX with his favorite dog, Captain. Graduating from Sweetwater Newman High School in 1957, he later moved to Odessa where he met and married the love of his life, Doris Johnson Nichols on August 12, 1961, in Odessa.

He was a devoted member of Belmont Baptist Church, serving as treasurer and as a deacon. He served in the Army National Guard and worked for the Texas Electric Transmission Division, starting at the bottom and working his way to crew foreman and office supervisor, receiving many awards and honors along the way. He was devoted to his job, where he worked for 40 years before retiring. He then returned to work as a consultant for several years before retiring again.

He served his community as a member of the Breakfast Optimist Club and volunteered as a leader in the Boy Scouts and as a coach for the Boy's Club football teams at Ross and Blanton elementary schools for many years. He loved high school football and especially his Permian Panther football teams, being a long-time season ticket holder and lifelong supporter. He also loved trout fishing and made many trips to Colorado in search of the next trophy trout. He served in the Civil Air Patrol which led to a love of airplanes and flying and was an exchange Cadet with Canada while in high school. Most of all, he was most proud of his family, being active in his sons' activities and supporting his beloved grandchildren.

He is preceded in his passage by his parents; his wife Doris (Johnson) Nichols; and brother, Jerry Nichols.

He is survived by his sister, Jan Boren of Dallas; sons, Dr. Charles Wayne Nichols Jr. and wife Debbie of Grand Prairie, Dr. Patrick Jay Nichols and wife Dr. Doinita Neiner of Los Alamos, NM; four grandchildren, Jeremiah Nichols and wife Emily of Mountain View, MO, Meredith Nichols of Dallas, TX, Rebekah Ramyar and husband Ahmad of Mesquite TX, and Brandusa Neiner-Nichols of Los Alamos, NM; seven great-grandchildren, Hosanna, Havilah, Shalom, Simeon, Sahar, Zaki, and Yosef; and many nieces and nephews as well as his Belmont Baptist Church and Morada Assisted Living friends.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to Belmont Baptist Church or the Parkinson's Foundation. The family gratefully acknowledges the staff of Morada Grand Prairie Assisted Living for his care and community over the last few years.

There will be a visitation with family from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, August 5th.

Services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 6th at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. John McLemore officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Pastor Jeremiah Nichols, grandson, officiating.
