Colonel Harold Woodrow Scruggs, USAF (retired), passed away in his sleep at 91 on November 14, 2007. He was born to Ellis and Mittie Scruggs on September 2, 1916 in Hollis, Oklahoma. Colonel Scruggs served in the United States Air Force for over twenty years. As a fighter pilot in World II, he flew 66 missions over Europe. After World II, he continued to serve his country in Panama, Asia and at home in the United States. After his retirement from the USAF in 1961, he and his family moved to Phoenix. This is when he began dreaming and designing of their custom home in Cave Creek. Col. Scruggs completed building the "house on the hill" in the early 1970s and lived there with his wife for the nearly thirty years. He is survived by his son Robert; daughters Tamara Quarelli, Patria Hjermstad, and Lisan Scruggs; grandchildren Gina (David) Finell, Michael Quarelli, and Christina Quarelli. Harold was preceded in death by his brother Orville, sister Werta and wife Iveane. Private services will be held at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 East Flower Street, Phoenix, AZ 85014. Arrangements entrusted to Messinger Indian School Mortuary.
