Marvin R. Stokes, age 44, a Marion, Ohio resident for six years and formerly of Toledo, Ohio, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, November 17, 2007, at 5:16 p.m. at Marion General Hospital. Born June 29, 1963, in Toledo to the late James L. "Jimmy" Carter and Eleanor Jean (McNary) Stokes who survives in Toledo. On September 11, 1991, he was joined in marriage to Jean M. (Tomaszewski) Stokes who survives. He has been employed over 23 years in youth services, State of Ohio, Department of Corrections, first in Maumee, Ohio and the past 6 years in Marion, Ohio. Also surviving are two sons, Jamarr R. and Jaz M. Stokes at home, one step daughter, Alajsha Johnson of Toledo; six brothers, William McNary, Charles Stokes, Clay Stokes, Darris (Marquita) Stokes, all of Toledo, Vincent (Krista) Stokes of Fostoria, OH, Guy Stokes of Norfolk, VA; four sisters, Aleta (Richard) Singer, Debra Stokes, Merle Stokes, Dionne Stokes of Toledo; step mother, Christine (Danny) Patterson and the Carter and Patterson families; father-in-law, Melvin Tomaszewski of Toledo; sister-in-law, Judy Tomaszewski of Toledo; brother-in-law, James (Sharon) Tomaszewski of Florida, and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jerome Carter; a sister, Bonita J. Stokes; two grandmothers and two grandfathers. Marvin graduated from Macomber High Sschool in Toledo and attended ITT Technical College in Columbus. He was an avid OSU and Pittsburgh Steelers fan. He enjoyed cooking for his family. They will remember him as a "Gentle giant of a man" who loved his family. Family will receive friends Wednesday, November 21, 2007 from 3:00 p.m. till 7:00 p.m. at Gunder/Hall & Folk Funeral Directors, 347 West Center Street, Marion, Ohio and Friday, November 23, 2007 from 1:00 p.m. till 4:00 p.m. at the Dale-Riggs Funeral Home, 572 Nebraska Ave. Toledo, Ohio. Funeral Services will begin at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, November 24, 2007 at the Bethel Apostolic Temple, Toledo, Ohio. Burial will follow in Historic Woodlawn Cemetery. Local arrangements in Toledo, Ohio are being handled through Dale-Riggs Funeral Home, 572 Nebraska Ave., Toledo, Ohio. Memorial contributions should be made to the family for further education of his sons.
