Obituary:

Mrs. Frances Aman Ward, 86, of Greensboro, NC passed away at Well-Spring Retirement Community on November 14, 2016.

Mrs. Ward was born in Greenville, NC, on December 4, 1929, to the late John and Ruth Aman.

Frances graduated from Greenville High School in 1947 and Greensboro College with a Bachelor of Music in Piano and Organ 1951.

After graduation she married the love of her life Jim Ward on June 7, 1951. Frances and Jim raised three beautiful children together in Haw River and Greensboro.

She was an example to her children of a strong southern Christian woman who cared and nurtured everyone in her path. She was a very special person with many dear friends. Frances and her husband were charter members of Christ United Methodist Church in Greensboro. She was passionate about music. Frances shared her love of music by being the organist at Graham United Methodist Church as well as teaching piano with the Alamance County Schools and in her home.

Frances loved living and was an avid active outdoors woman. She enjoyed camping, rock fishing, tennis, Tai Chi and birding. Frances and Jim had a zealous appetite for birding all over the US and in many foreign countries. Yet if you ask her family and friends they would tell you her true passion was sailing with her beloved Jim. They started out racing sailboats with the High Rock Yacht Club. They then turned to cruising sailboats from north Chesapeake Bay to the Florida keys. Her favorite place to cruise was the British Virgin Islands with Jim and friends.

Frances was a devoted participant in the United States Power Squadrons and held the rating of Advanced Pilot. She was one of the first Women's Certificate Holder of Greensboro Power Squadron. For many years Frances and Jim kept a sailboat in Oriental, NC where they later moved and lived for 13 years.

After many years of cruising out of Oriental she and Jim moved back to Greensboro where they made Well-Spring Retirement Community their home. While at Well-Spring Frances enjoyed working in the library and socializing with residents who became dear friends. Frances often stated that "no matter what happens Jim and I have had a wonderful life".

Her family wishes to express gratitude to the many compassionate and exemplary staff at Well-Spring and their relationship with Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro who cared for Frances and family during her illness.

Surviving is her husband of 65 years Jim Ward; son Jim Ward of Carolina Beach; daughter Barbara Bist (husband Mike) of Tallahassee; daughter Betsy MacKenzie (husband Colin) of Oak Ridge; 5 grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Well-Spring Retirement Community Monday, November 21, 2016 at 2:00pm.

In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to Well-Spring Benevolent Fund at 4100 Well-Spring Drive Greensboro, NC 27410.

"Believe me my young friend there is nothing- absolutely nothing- half so much worth doing as simple messing about in boats". Wind in The Willows
