Thomas "Fitz" Fitzpatrick, Jr.
November 12, 1938 - July 31, 2021
Mooresville, North Carolina - Thomas Raymond Fitzpatrick Jr, 82, of Charlotte, passed away on Saturday, July 31, 2021 surrounded by the family he loved at the lake house he loved. Born November 12, 1938, the son of Raymond and Kathleen Fitzpatrick, "Fitz" was part of the first graduating class of Charlotte Catholic High in 1956. There, he met the love of his life, Shirley Benner, in 1954. They married in 1964 and established their home in South Charlotte, where they would raise their family.
In 1972, Fitz acquired a lot on Lake Norman, which became the center of family activities for the next 50 years. The beautiful, heavily wooded lot was where he and his family gathered, learned, built a weekend home, and played together. He worked tirelessly to make it a place where all were welcome and all could enjoy. In 2001, Shirley and Fitz moved to Lake Norman to enjoy their retirement.
Fitz worked in the Ophthalmic/Optometric industry for 40 years with Bausch & Lomb, Milton Roy, and CooperVision before retiring in 2001. He was an excellent Sales Professional, Manager, and Executive during his career, but his success was always about people. He never met a stranger, and in so many ways, was about lifting people up, sharing a laugh, and generally enjoying time with anyone that had or would listen to a funny story.
Fitz was passionate about his family, aka "Poppy" to his grandchildren, and was very involved in their lives and upbringing. The kids were always excited to go to the lake to see Mimi and Poppy, where they would play, laugh, jet ski, and boat (and eat ice cream!). He never missed an event and was always there when the family needed help, support, or encouragement.
He is survived by his loving wife Shirley, two sons; Tom and his wife Allison; Mark and his wife Katie, and four grandchildren: Matthew, Liam, Jack, and Sam; his Sister Mary Manion; and brother Robert and his wife Terry Thirion.
A Funeral Mass and Celebration of Tom's life will be held at the family home on Lake Norman on August 13, 2021. For details and to RSVP go to https://www.eventcreate.com/e/honorfitz
