He attended Creston Schools and graduated from Creston High School in 1935. He married Edna R. Moser on October 1, 1952 in Greeley, Colorado. Herbert was a member of the Creston Baptist Church where he had served as the church clerk for many years, he also served on the Humphrey Township Board. He farmed all of his life on the family farm and retired in 1988, when he moved to Columbus. Herbert enjoyed traveling and family gatherings.
