Jim was the son of Sarah (maiden name unknown) Simmons who was born in Georgia. His father is still unknown at this time. Around 1851, the family moved to Alabama and then around 1854 moved to Burleson county Texas near the present location of Caldwell. Jim married Martha Jane Posey in Burleson county TX in 1868. In 1880 Jim, his wife Martha, and their children are found on that year's census living in in Gonzales, Gonzales county TX. They are next found on the 1900 census living in Lee county near the community of Adina, where Jim is buried.

James is the brother to F. W. Simmons buried next to him.
