Don was born September 13, 1933, in Wauseon, Ohio. He moved to Taft from Holt, Michigan, after graduating high school in 1950. He was employed by Standard Oil of California/Chevron for 40 years (1952-1992). After retirement, he was a volunteer at the Taft NEED Center for ten years and was a self-employed "Yard Guy" from 1993 until just before his passing.
Don will be remembered for his jokes and his great storytelling about, among other things, growing up in Michigan and his days working at Chevron/Standard Oil. He could always make people laugh. All of us will miss his sense of humor, his ability to perceive the absurdity in others (especially in politicians at every level), his appreciation of good plays and movies, great music, interesting books and sharing that appreciation in intelligent discussions.
Don loved his family and his many dogs. He will be dearly missed by his wife of 39 years Barbara and his dogs Tinkerbell and Little Girl; his sister Joan Smith of Mason Michigan. His children - Gail Steward, St. Paul, Minnesota, Vanessa Goldeen (David), San Luis Obispo, California, Donald C. Steward (Diane), Bakersfield California, Daniel C. Steward (Sandra), The Woodlands, Texas. Barbara's children - Christa Coffee (Taft) and Allan Coffee (Lisa Lamar), Santa Ana, California. Their grandchildren - James Spence (Anne Gueit), Tom Spence (Jennie), Ryan Hall, Faith Grutzmacher (Erin), Donald Oatis Steward II (Lori), Justin and Paul Steward (Devon); Juliana, Jessica, Janey and Jenevieve Steward; Jeremiah Sherman, Jessie Hutchison, and Cole Reves; Ryan and Calvin Coffee. Their great-grandchildren Ava, Emma, and Malina Steward; Elias Harden and June Grutzmacher, Aidan Hall, Xavier Sherman and Adrien Gueit and Emma Spence.
Per Don's wishes there will not be a service. Memorials may be made in Don's memory to Marley's Mutts, Tehachapi, California (marleysmutts.org).
