Mary Elaine Berns was born on May 8, 1930, at rural Strawberry Point, Iowa, the daughter of

Marvin Henry & Frances Jane (Gleason) Berns. She was raised on the family farm near Strawberry Point where she graduated from Strawberry Point High School in the class of 1947. Elaine continued her education in business school and was employed by an Elkader law firm. Elaine married Don Welsh on June 24, 1950, at St. Mary's Church, Strawberry Point. They farmed near Elkader until 1974 and then moved to Cedar Rapids. At the age of 44 years, Elaine became employed at Mercy Hospital in the medical records department as a Medical Records Correspondence Secretary for 15 years. This was an impressive accomplishment for Elaine as it was her job to work with the law firms in regard to medical claims. Her efforts were deemed extraordinary by the law firms she worked with. Although Elaine worked professionally, she still had time to be a second mother to ten nieces and nephews and 17 great nieces and nephews. She was famous for her birthday cards, brownies and licorice. Elaine later married Gene Waters on November 4, 1995, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein. Elaine and Gene enjoyed their time together until Gene's passing on March 3, 2004. Elaine continued to live in Oelwein until entering the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein.

Left to cherish Elaine's memory are her Sister: Jeannine Tucker of Manchester;

10 Nieces & Nephews: John (Peggy) Tucker of Strawberry Point,

Phyllis Tucker (William Kipp) of Estes Park, Colorado,

Mary (Terry) Knickerbocker of Strawberry Point,
