James Oliver "Jim" Hampel, age 78, of Fitchburg, passed away on Sunday, July 25, 2021 at Agrace HospiceCare. He was born on Aug. 26, 1942 in Green Bay, WI, son of Oliver and Louella (Starr) Hampel.
Jim graduated from Green Bay West High School in 1960 and enrolled at University of Wisconsin School of Engineering. Along with his engineering degree, he completed four years of Army ROTC, graduating as a 2nd Lieutenant. After graduation, he served the U.S. Army in Korea until 1970.
Jim joined IBM in Oshkosh and later Evanston, Chicago, Norwalk and Madison, working as a systems engineer and instructor for 19 years. While working at IBM Chicago, he met and subsequently married Rachel Baker and eventually they moved back to his favorite city, Madison, WI. After his IBM career, Jim became a self-taught and successful investor. Jim was a hobby farmer and forester as well and was always a passionate Packers fan.
James is survived by his wife, Rachel Baker; and sister, Jane (Frank) Corrado. He was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver and Louella.
Burial will be held at Resurrection Cemetery.
