Daniel Michael Joseph Rowland, age 83 of South Bend, passed away peacefully at Memorial Hospital on Sunday, July 25, 2021. Dan was born August 31, 1937 in Brooklyn, New York to the late Raymond and Marie (McNevin) Rowland.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Dorothy (Rudolf) Rowland, his children Mark (Theresa) Rowland of Palo Alto, CA; Daniel (Mary) Rowland of Westerville, OH; Annette (Steve) Romans of South Bend, IN; and Linda (Rich) Rowland-Buckley of South Hadley, MA; his sister Janet Baker of Mineola, NY; his brother Paul (Christine) Rowland of West Sayville, NY; his grandchildren Patrick (Courtney) Rowland, Dominick (Elise) Romans, Emily Rowland, Max Romans, Miles Romans, Zoe Rowland-Simpson, Isaac Romans, Christopher Rowland; and extended family across the country.

Dan grew up in Queens, New York, close to relatives on both sides of the family, and greatly enjoyed time spent with grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Dan was an avid sports enthusiast from an early age and often recalled favorite memories of "sneaking off" to Ebbets Field with his mom in the afternoons to watch the Brooklyn Dodgers while his dad was at work. While attending Power Memorial Academy in New York, Dan excelled at track and field, and would speak proudly of his performances at meets held at Madison Square Garden. Dan will be remembered for his passion as a coach for his brother Paul's Little League Team in Hollis, New York, and, later, as "Coach Grandpa" for his grandchildren in the local South Bend leagues. But he will be most well remembered for his spirited fandom --- cheering on children, grandchildren, or his beloved Mets, Giants, Jets, and Fighting Irish.

Dan enjoyed entertainment outside of sports, as well, whether it was dancing in the living room of the family home with his sister, cousins, and friends as teenagers, the rumored dance stint at an American Bandstand event, movie-watching, golf outings, New Year's Eve parties, vacationing with family in the Poconos, Florida, and Arizona, or traveling the world. Dan was a people-person and, in his retirement years, morning coffee with his friends was always a highlight of his week.

An entrepreneur from an early age, Dan launched his career as a young boy with a lucrative newspaper route, ultimately leading to a lifetime career as an insurance executive with wide experience in corporate financial management. Dan's career included posts in Manhattan, Long Island, and Albany, New York. In addition to his work in the insurance field, Dan served in the Army Reserves, and was active in the Knights of Columbus on Long Island and in South Bend. Prior to 2020, Dan spent many years supporting Fish Fry efforts at Santa Maria Council 553. He was firm in his Catholic beliefs, and taught Catholic Catechism.

A faithful and generous family man and one who valued a quality education, Dan encouraged and supported his children and grandchildren in their educational pursuits, beginning with Catholic elementary education on through post-baccalaureate degrees. Dan always wanted the best for family and friends and encouraged everyone to pursue their dreams. He pursued his own dream of obtaining a bachelor's degree in business administration.

Dan was a devoted son, brother, father, grandfather, uncle, and exceptionally dedicated husband to his wife, Dotty. A Memorial Mass is being planned for late August, to be held at St. Therese, Little Flower Catholic Parish.
