She was the oldest daughter of seven children. Her father died at the young age of 48, so Sheila helped her mom take care of Sheila's six siblings, including four brothers and two sisters.
After graduating from Chatard High School, Sheila earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Speech and Hearing Therapy from Purdue University. She then earned a Master's degree in Special Education from Butler University.
Sheila's first teaching position was speech and hearing therapy for Harrison School in Mississippi. She lived in Mississippi during Hurricane Camille, the 2nd most intense hurricane to strike the continental US in history. Sheila continued her teaching career in Indiana for 33 years, serving students in multiple Lawrence Township Schools. Brook Park Elementary was the last elementary school she worked for. Sheila's teaching philosophy was to "do the best I can do for every student."
Sheila had a love for Special Education. For nearly 20 years she coached local, state, and international Special Olympics bowling teams, eventually becoming Special Olympics program coordinator for Lawrence Township. Sheila and her Special Olympic International bowling team were honored to sit as guests with Vice President George H W Bush and Barbara Bush at the International Pan Am Games in Indianapolis. Sheila also had the privilege of meeting Eunice Kennedy Shriver, the founder of Special Olympics.
Sheila was an active member of the Indianapolis Bridge Center and achieved Life Master. She was also co-president of the Beta Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society and an active member. Both organizations meant the world to her and brought her many valuable friendships!
Sheila was preceded in death by her parents, Thelma and Forest Persinger, and her brother Kenneth (surviving spouse Sherry) Persinger. Sheila is survived by her siblings Thomas (Gail) Persinger, John (Michelle) Persinger, Richard (Dawn) Persinger, Kathryn (Mark) Helmke, and Theresa (Gregg) Anderson.
