James H. Carroll , 94, passed away Sunday, July 25, 2021 following a sudden illness.
A native of Pendleton, SC, Jim was a son of the late William B. Carroll and Nobie Inez Carver Carroll Hembree.
He grew up in Anderson, SC and enlisted in the Army at age 18. He was on a transport ship in the Pacific on the way to Japan when the bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. Jim was stationed in Japan after the bombing as part of the occupational forces. He attended Clemson on the G.I. Bill, graduating in 1950 B.G. (Before Girls) with a BS in Textile Engineering. He worked at Gossett Mill in Anderson before moving to Aiken in 1953 to work for DuPont at the Savannah River Plant. Jim had a long career with DuPont, retiring in 1989 as a computer programmer.
Jim was a member of the 50 + Senior Men's Club and the VFW. He was a charter member of Trinity United Methodist Church where he formerly served as Sunday School Superintendent and was Treasurer for over 25 years. He was active in the Choir, where he was lovingly known as "Baby Jim". Jim loved golf and played regularly with his buddy Chick Key and as recently as 3 weeks ago. Jim bought a new car and drove to Myrtle Beach by himself and spent a week having just returned home last Sunday, the 18th..
Survivors include his daughter, Patti Carroll Kleinbub Pittman (Jay), Aiken; stepchildren, Robin V. Verenes (Deno), Aiken, Penny B. Johnson (Cary), North Augusta, Sandra B. Yount (Wayne), Claremore, OK, Larry Bagwell, Kuwait; grandchildren, Stacey Longshore, Daniel Pittman (Jennifer), April Golding (Michael), Mark Pittman (Katie), Nick Verenes (Roni), Lisa Lake (Eric), Michael Verenes (Anna), Vicki Johnson, Mark Johnson (Carissa), April B. Morina (Florim), Kathryn Hawkins (Steve), Holly Winters (Jared); greatgrandchildren, Celseste, Langston, Lib, Ansley, Austin, Caroline, Mae, John, Will, Luke, Eli, Carson, Adelyn, Ariana, Justin, Corbin, Erin Grace, Carson, Logan, Kate, Reid, Gis; in-laws he dearly loved, Dot F. Simpson, Betty T. Franklin, Herb and Sue Franklin; special daughters, daughter #2 Joye Brotherton, daughter #3 Karen Erickson (David), daughter #4, Annabelle Roever (Michael).
Jim was preceded in death by his first wife, Mildred Franklin Carroll in 2003 and his second wife, Flora Caines Bagwell in February of this year.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, William G. Carroll.
The family will receive friends at Trinity United Methodist Church. The funeral service will follow with The Revs., Tyler Strange and Dr. Donnie Bates officiating.
Interment will be in Aiken Memorial Gardens.
