Dr. Dennis Holloway Jr., 71, of Jackson, died Saturday, June 14, 2003, at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Word of Faith Christian Center Church, with burial in Garden Memorial Park. He is the son of the late Dennis and Ora D. Holloway. He was born Feb. 7, 1932 in Laurel. At an early age, Dennis received Christ as his personal Savior and guide. He graduated from Oak Park High School. High school classmates would describe him as a dedicated scholar and athlete. Alcorn State University was the next step in Dennis' academic career, until he was called to serve in the U.S. Army. Upon his return, he enrolled in Jackson State University, the place where he met the love of his life, the former Mary Ann Johnson. They were united in holy matrimony on June 9, 1956. Unto this union five children were born. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Science Education from Jackson State University in 1958. In 1966 and 1975 he obtained his Master of Science degree in General Science from Atlanta University and his Doctor of Education degree in Science Education from Mississippi State University. He began his career as an educator at E. H. Keys High school in Ocean Springs. There he taught mathematics and science from 1958 to 1964. In 1966, he began his long and distinguished career at Jackson State University as an assistant professor of Chemistry. Prior to his retirement from JSU in 1994, he served in a number of positions including Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, Vice President of Administration, Vice President of Student Affairs, and then Executive Assistant to the President. His career at Jackson State University complementarily overlapped his service as a Captain in the U.S. Naval Reserve. For 21 years, as Naval Captain he served as the U.S. Naval Campus Liaison Officer at Jackson State University. His service to students and the community at large continued after his retirement from JSU in 1994. Key positions included president of the Jackson Public School Board of Trustees, member of the Jackson-Hinds Economic Development District and president of the Dalehaven Homeowners and Voters Association. He was a faithful and dedicated member of the Church of the Living God where he served as a deacon and Sunday School Superintendent. He received many recognitions and awards. Most notables include 11 Gold Wreath Recruiting Awards in Recruiting from the United States Navy (1978-1990). Administrator of the Year, Jackson State University Senior Class, 1986; United States Navy Commendation Medal, 1990; United States Navy Campus Liaison Officer of the Year, 1990; Mississippi State University Alumnus of the Year by the School of Education,1994; Named Parents of the Year by the Jackson State University Honors College, 1989; Selected "Father of the Year" Ward 3, Jackson, Mississippi, June 2002. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Mary Ann Holloway; three daughters, Carolyn Holloway Sterling of Jackson, Cheryl Holloway of St. Louis, Mo., Pamala Smith of Chicago; two sons, Dennis Holloway of Jackson, and Michael Holloway of Indianapolis, Ind.; six grandchildren, Andrea Sterling of Jackson, Alex Holloway IV of Jackson, Marcus Smith of Chicago, Akeem Holloway of Indianapolis, Ind., Marissa Smith of Chicago and Asad Holloway of Indianapolis; one sister, Juarez Elliot from Meridian; two brothers, Jonas Hodges of Chicago and Lewis Clark of Oakgrove, La.; and a host of in-laws; nieces; nephews; relatives and dear friends.
