Charlotte Marie Pope passed away January 17, 2012 at Selah, Yakima County, Washington.

Charlotte was born February 13, 1925 in Miller, Hand County, South Dakota in the home of her paternal grandparents, William and Sarah (Wilson) Yost. She was the first of seven siblings born to Charley and Hazel (Campbell) Yost. Her parents lived in a claim shanty SW of Miller and were employed by Ed and Dollie Miller.

Charlotte graduated from Miller High School in 1943. She and V. Dale McCartney, son of Bliss B. and Lena M. (Longenecker) McCartney, were married September 2, 1945. Charlotte and Dale lived on a farm south of St. Lawrence, SD. They adopted two children, Bradley and Michelle. They later moved to Ellensburg, WA.

Her father indicated that he would support her efforts to become either a nurse or a teacher. Charlotte chose to be a teacher. She taught 16 years in South Dakota County Schools; 13 years of teaching primary grades in Ellensburg, WA and 13 years in McClure School in Yakima, WA.

Charlotte was active in the Women of the Moose earning her College of Regents Degree; in Alpha Delta Kappa, a Teacher's Sorority, and many Masonic Orders. She was a Past Presiding Officer Illihee Chapter of Eastern Star, Sunrise Court, Order of Amaranth, Calvary Shrine, Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem, and Women of Chelminar Grotto.
She is survived by son, Bradley McCartney, daughter, Michelle McCartney Vance (Daniel), grandchildren Michael McCartney (Catherine), Ashley Zieba, Brian Vance, and Taylor Dale Vance; siblings, Edwin Yost, (Norma), Patricia Waters, Ardessa Moser (Richard), Wilson Yost (Iona), and Charles Yost (Kathy) of the Miller, SD area.

She was preceded in death by husbands, Dale McCartney, Ralph A. Smith, and Kenneth Pope; parents, Yost grandparents, Campbell grandparents, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Husband #1: Vallee Dale McCartney September 2, 1945 Hand, SD.
Husband #2: Ralph A. Smith August 16, 1975 in Kittitas, WA.
Husband #3: Kenneth W. Pope August 12, 1991 in Greys Harbor, WA.

She greeted life with an exceptional gusto and perseverance. She said of life, "Life was wonderful and worth the struggle. I just ran out of time. I'm thankful for my long life; for the opportunity to rise from the dust storm of the depression, to earn my Master's Degree in Education, teach forty-two years, raise a family, and encourage others to do their best and be achievers."

Memorial Service: January 28, 2012 at Selah United Methodist Church.
It was Charlotte's wish to be buried with her parents in GAR Cemetery, Miller, SD.
She rests in the arms of her loving savior, the Lord, Jesus Christ.
